From Expertise to Influence: How Leaders Build a Reputation Worth Having

There are leaders whose names come up every time a journalist needs a sharp take, a board needs a steady hand, or an industry needs someone to say the thing nobody else will. Getting to that point is not luck. There is a pattern to it.

In over 20 years working with CEOs, boards and senior leaders, the ones who earn that kind of trust share something in common. They were trying to understand something, solve something, or say something they believed needed to be said.

The leaders who approach it the other way, starting with the headline and working backwards to the substance, tend to get found out. Not dramatically, but gradually. The coverage lands and then goes quiet. The credibility never quite catches up.

Real thought leadership is slower than that, and more internal than most people expect. It starts with leaders who take the time to genuinely hone their expertise, who share knowledge with their teams before they broadcast it anywhere, and who contribute to the broader conversation in their industry consistently, not just when it suits their agenda.

Over time something quietly shifts. They stop needing to pitch themselves into rooms. They get called in. Their perspective is sought out. They become the person journalists ring when they want someone who will say something worth publishing.

That is when it works. Not as a tactic, but as a reputation.

If you are a CEO or senior leader thinking about your profile, start with your thinking, not your platform. Be generous with your knowledge. Share it internally. Let it be tested and challenged and refined. When you eventually take it to market, it will land because it is grounded in real experience and real leadership.

Coverage without credibility makes noise. It rarely makes an impact.
